Dear Parents,
We understand it can be difficult to hear that school will be out of session for some time, and we want to make it as easy as possible for your child to continue learning and growing even while we are not together at Lansing Christian. The resources below are meant to make it easier on you, the parent, and we hope that they will be fun for your child. This newsletter and linked resources will be available on LCS’s website.
We ask that while we are away from school, you do your best to help your child complete the items in this newsletter so that we have a smooth transition back to our study in each subject area. Please use the manilla envelope provided to return the various projects. Extra papers included are for extra practice, and do not need to be returned.
Here’s a look at what is ahead this week:
THEME: Up with Umbrellas!
LETTER/LANGUAGE ARTS: U is the next letter in line. “U” is for umbrella, under, up, United States and lots of “un-“ words like untie, unlock, and unzip. At home, please have your child glue the small umbrellas to the letter U, and watch and listen to the following books that have to do with umbrellas and the clouds that necessitate them: Little Cloud, It Looked Like Spilt Milk, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Help your child learn the shape of the letter Uu, practice it on our morning work pages, and learn that like all vowels Uu makes two different sounds. It can be short like umbrella, and long like unicorn.
SIGHT WORD: “us” and “up”
BIBLE: Review with your child the stories of Jesus’ miracles by having your child retell the stories we have done so far in class, using the book they have been coloring in: Jesus heals a blind man, Jesus heals a deaf man, Jesus heals a lame man, Jesus heals a man with leprosy.
BIBLE MEMORY: Practice our new verse, Luke 7:22, “The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.”
MATH: #11 We are moving on to double digit numbers! Please work on number eleven with your child (writing and recognizing), and complete the #1 book to return to school.. In these little books will focus on correct formation of the numbers, and coloring in the lines (fine motor skills).
SCIENCE: clouds and rain – help your child observe the different types of clouds, and talk about how the rain helps plants to grow.
SHOW-and-TELL: please complete “The umbrella is under” page by having your child glue the colorful umbrella at the bottom of the page and color a picture above it. An example page is linked online.
March 23-27, 2020
THEME: Spring is Here!
LETTER/LANGUAGE ARTS: There is no new letter this week, but we hope you will be reviewing Letters A-U. To get ready for when we return, please have your child add the vegetable stickers to the letter V and return it to school. At home, please talk with your child about various signs of spring: the return of birds, and new growth – in eggs, and in plants and trees. We’ll send home books links for your child to view for this week as it gets closer.
BIBLE: Read the next three stories in our Bible unit, and ask your child to color the corresponding pages in their Bible story booklet: Jesus feeds the 5,000 (Matthew 14:13-21, John 6:1-15), Jesus raises the widow’s son (Luke 7:11-17), and Jesus calms the storm (Mark4:35-41). We will finish the rest of the booklet and stories when we return to school; please send the book back in the manilla envelope.
BIBLE MEMORY: Practice our memory verse: Luke 7:22, “The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.”
MATH: #12 We are moving on to double digit numbers! Please work on number twelve with your child (writing and recognizing), and complete the #2 book to return to school. In these little books will focus on correct formation of the numbers, and coloring in the lines (fine motor skills).
SOCIAL STUDIES: What to wear in spring weather: As the weather begins to warm, discuss with your child how we will change from wearing heavy winter clothes to lighter spring clothing. Your child may enjoy singing “The Snowkey Pokey” (The Hokey Pokey) and suggesting spring clothing items to replace the winter clothing items in the song: umbrella, rain boots, raincoat, etc.
SHOW-and-TELL: Please help your child look for signs of spring to take a picture of, or have them draw a picture, find one in a book or magazine, or print one from the computer to show when we return to school. Please send this picture back to school in the manilla envelope. Thank you!
